1
00:00:15,800 --> 00:00:21,906
Too often we forget
how lucky we are to go to school.
2
00:00:22,666 --> 00:00:24,934
In certain parts of the world,
3
00:00:25,066 --> 00:00:29,270
the journey to school is an obstacle course
and knowledge is a conquest.
4
00:00:30,000 --> 00:00:33,236
Every morning,
sometimes at the risk of their lives,
5
00:00:33,366 --> 00:00:36,502
heroic children embark on a journey
toward knowledge.
6
00:00:37,333 --> 00:00:41,403
These school children are the heroes
of their own stories,
7
00:00:41,533 --> 00:00:42,967
true stories...
8
00:02:31,666 --> 00:02:37,872
Jackson - 11 years old
Laikipia - Kenya
9
00:04:52,033 --> 00:04:54,435
Father, can I help you make charcoal?
10
00:04:56,000 --> 00:04:58,135
Put some soil here.
11
00:05:15,766 --> 00:05:17,934
I washed my uniform this morning.
12
00:06:50,000 --> 00:06:52,402
Here, Salome, your plate.
13
00:06:55,533 --> 00:06:57,568
Eat up, children.
14
00:06:57,699 --> 00:06:59,401
Finish your plates.
15
00:07:08,100 --> 00:07:09,835
You're going to school tomorrow.
16
00:07:09,966 --> 00:07:12,702
There are elephants, you know.
17
00:07:12,833 --> 00:07:18,505
I'll go to the river,
then past the hill with the pierced rock.
18
00:07:18,633 --> 00:07:22,436
If you see elephants, steer clear of them.
19
00:07:23,066 --> 00:07:28,137
If they come toward you, run.
20
00:07:28,266 --> 00:07:30,401
And when you're walking,
21
00:07:30,533 --> 00:07:37,473
be attentive to what's around you.
22
00:07:38,266 --> 00:07:40,301
I'll be attentive. I'll follow your advice.
23
00:08:00,033 --> 00:08:00,033
5:30 a.m.
24
00:08:01,666 --> 00:08:04,535
5:30 a.m.
We have to get going,
25
00:08:04,866 --> 00:08:07,868
it's my turn to raise the flag
this morning.
26
00:08:12,733 --> 00:08:16,403
May your path be free of obstacles.
27
00:08:16,533 --> 00:08:18,801
May your school be blessed.
28
00:08:18,933 --> 00:08:23,904
May your pen be blessed
and bring you success.
29
00:08:24,033 --> 00:08:26,034
Bless you, my children.
30
00:08:26,166 --> 00:08:28,601
May you make it to school unharmed.
31
00:08:55,200 --> 00:08:56,734
Stay close.
32
00:08:58,833 --> 00:09:00,301
Follow me.
33
00:09:05,533 --> 00:09:05,533
journey to school: 15km - 2h
34
00:09:08,433 --> 00:09:12,503
journey to school: 15km - 2h
every morning
35
00:09:22,533 --> 00:09:28,205
Zahira - 12 years old
High Atlas, Morocco
36
00:10:23,966 --> 00:10:25,467
Grandma!
37
00:10:27,966 --> 00:10:32,470
I'll read to you before I go.
38
00:10:34,466 --> 00:10:35,567
When are you leaving?
39
00:10:35,700 --> 00:10:37,835
Tomorrow, God willing.
40
00:10:53,700 --> 00:10:57,136
Did you ever go to school?
41
00:10:57,266 --> 00:10:58,634
No.
42
00:10:59,033 --> 00:11:00,868
I never went to school.
43
00:11:01,299 --> 00:11:03,135
I only went to the mosque.
44
00:11:03,633 --> 00:11:05,735
The Taleb was our teacher.
45
00:11:05,866 --> 00:11:08,301
He taught us "Al Hamdou".
46
00:11:09,200 --> 00:11:11,368
"Al Hamdou" and the verses.
47
00:11:12,133 --> 00:11:13,701
Is that all you learned?
48
00:11:13,833 --> 00:11:14,700
Yes.
49
00:11:14,833 --> 00:11:19,204
There was only the mosque for those
who wanted to learn.
50
00:11:19,766 --> 00:11:24,370
Those were different times.
51
00:11:26,200 --> 00:11:28,569
Today, things are much better.
52
00:11:28,700 --> 00:11:32,203
Study so you won't become like us.
53
00:11:32,533 --> 00:11:39,306
Become intelligent to do well
for yourself.
54
00:12:22,533 --> 00:12:26,303
So, Zahira, you're leaving tomorrow.
55
00:12:27,200 --> 00:12:29,569
What time do you start school?
56
00:12:29,700 --> 00:12:32,302
At 10 o'clock.
57
00:12:32,433 --> 00:12:35,536
Your studies are what's most important.
58
00:12:35,666 --> 00:12:38,702
You must study.
59
00:12:39,200 --> 00:12:43,637
The boarding-house is paying your way,
so be conscientious.
60
00:12:44,799 --> 00:12:48,837
May God help you in your studies.
61
00:12:50,700 --> 00:12:54,003
You'll be with your friends
Noura and Zineb.
62
00:12:59,233 --> 00:13:01,902
May God allow you to reach your goal.
63
00:13:02,033 --> 00:13:04,735
To do well and be the best of the class.
64
00:13:24,133 --> 00:13:26,702
- Zahira, you're leaving, my girl?
- Yes.
65
00:13:26,833 --> 00:13:28,234
God be with you.
66
00:13:28,366 --> 00:13:31,469
Study well! Good luck.
67
00:14:07,933 --> 00:14:07,933
journey to school: 22km - 4h
68
00:14:10,899 --> 00:14:14,570
journey to school: 22km - 4h
every Monday
69
00:15:26,700 --> 00:15:29,235
The elephants are often over there.
70
00:15:29,366 --> 00:15:34,637
But yesterday,
they were on the other side.
71
00:15:43,500 --> 00:15:47,737
Among the acacia trees.
Do you see the tall tree?
72
00:15:47,966 --> 00:15:51,803
There are some there.
73
00:15:57,200 --> 00:16:01,671
We have to go that way, today.
74
00:16:07,966 --> 00:16:10,735
I'd be scared, if I were alone!
75
00:16:28,033 --> 00:16:28,900
Zineb!
76
00:16:29,566 --> 00:16:30,433
Noura!
77
00:16:36,100 --> 00:16:37,234
Did you do your homework?
78
00:16:37,366 --> 00:16:38,533
Yes.
79
00:16:40,333 --> 00:16:41,834
But it was hard.
80
00:16:42,333 --> 00:16:44,234
Ok, we have to get going.
81
00:16:58,600 --> 00:17:00,568
Good luck carrying that hen!
82
00:17:59,299 --> 00:18:04,338
Carlos - 11 years old
Patagonia - Argentina
83
00:18:24,200 --> 00:18:25,568
Good morning, son.
84
00:18:27,033 --> 00:18:28,467
Want some "mate"?
85
00:19:20,599 --> 00:19:22,168
He's a cutie!
86
00:20:09,400 --> 00:20:11,568
Son, take this ribbon.
87
00:20:11,700 --> 00:20:15,070
It'll protect you on your way to school.
88
00:20:17,599 --> 00:20:19,001
Thanks, Dad.
89
00:20:41,000 --> 00:20:43,802
Carlito, what classes do you have today?
90
00:20:44,166 --> 00:20:45,400
Spanish.
91
00:20:46,700 --> 00:20:48,735
Do you know your times tables?
92
00:20:48,866 --> 00:20:49,633
Yes.
93
00:20:50,133 --> 00:20:52,635
I don't want any bad grades!
94
00:21:17,633 --> 00:21:19,401
Mica, hurry up!
95
00:21:30,533 --> 00:21:32,801
Cover up.
96
00:21:33,200 --> 00:21:36,102
It's still cold in the morning.
97
00:22:17,866 --> 00:22:18,733
Bye, son!
98
00:22:19,299 --> 00:22:21,902
Look after your sister!
99
00:22:25,599 --> 00:22:25,599
journey to school: 18km - 1h30
100
00:22:27,666 --> 00:22:31,569
journey to school: 18km - 1h30
every morning
101
00:22:41,099 --> 00:22:42,301
Hurry!
102
00:22:52,500 --> 00:22:53,968
Come on!
