何年もの間に、時折耳にすることがあった歌です。（竹内まりやに注目し直すことになったアルバム"Long Time Favorites" の中にも収録されていました。）
今回、新サイトへ引っ越しするに当たってYouTubeで調べてみて、今さらですが、これが映画「華麗なる賭け」のテーマ曲だと知りました。「一応」サスペンス映画とも言えるもののようですが、それに対して「風のささやき」というものさみしい曲との組み合わせに、興味を持ちました。
行きつけでないTSUTAYAに置いてあることが分かったので、借りてみました。
事前にストーリーは確かめていなかったので、「ちょっと」と思って見始めると、予想外のストーリーに結局最後まで一気に見てしまいました。
映画としての仕上がりにはやや疑問も感じますが、それなりに楽しめました。
「風のささやき」が映画のと中で流れるのは、スティーブ・マックイーン演じる主人公トーマス・クラウンがグライダーに乗って大空を飛び回るシーンです。
軽々と360°回転をしながらの飛行シーンに「円を描く」「回り続ける」「回転木馬」「心の風車」といった歌詞（日本語字幕で見ました）が重なるわけです。
歌が先にできでこのシーンができたのか、このシーンが先にできてそれに合わせた歌詞が作られたのかは分かりませんが、なかなか面白い組み合わせです。
例によって、日本語のタイトルは「華麗なる賭け」と内容を半分バラしたようなものですが、原題のThe Thomas Crown Affairは、「トーマス・クラウン事件」ということで、随分と違います。（ちなみに、love affairまで引っ掛けているかどうかは知りません。）
多くの歌手によってカバーされています。
